"The Martian Mayfly was developed to fool the selective rainbow and brown trout in the Deckers, Cheesman Canyon, and Dream Stream sections of the South Platte River in Colorado.
I wanted a small mayfly imitation that was highly visible and very buoyant to fish during trico and other small mayfly hatches.
The use of fluorescent monofilament as the parachute post allowed me to create a highly visible fly and since the diameter of the post is smaller than a traditional post, I was able to upsize the hackle which created more buoyancy without increasing the size of the fly.
This fly turns over more easily, lands upright more consistently, and lands more softly than a traditional parachute mayfly due to the reduction in bulk on the top of the fly.
Furthermore, since the post does not absorb water, it can be dried quickly and retreated with floatant so you can be back fishing more quickly."
