Jon Easdon
Signature Tyer
Jon was born in Leadville, Colorado and has spent his entire life outdoors in some form or fashion. He credits his father, an avid outdoorsman himself, as the earliest and most influential figure. “A couple of my earliest memories were watching my Dad skin an elk in hunting camp, or walking alongside a mountain stream fishing for brook trout. I can remember connecting with the outdoors right off the bat, and have always been at home outside.”
At age 12, Jon’s family moved to Woodland Park, where he saw someone fly fishing for the first time. Jon was immediately attracted to fly fishing. Not long after, he held a fly rod in his hand for the first time. He hasn't looked back.
Currently, Jon is the Director of Services and a Professional guide at Angler’s Covey in Colorado Springs, CO. He started guiding in 2007, and says, “I am incredibly grateful that I have been able to make a career out of my passion. I enjoy teaching fly fishing just as much as going fishing myself.”
Time at the tying table is also part of the passion. Jon has been tying seriously for many years. “Every time I tie, I feel inspired and hit a creative outlet. The idea of creating art that imitates life is so intriguing to me. How cool is it to create something that so effectively fools a fish that they think it's food and eat it?”
Jon’s first pattern with Umpqua, the Blindside Midge, has been a cult favorite for years among technical tailwater enthusiasts all over the world. Jon has been featured in articles in several fly fishing magazines, and some of his flies have been featured in Fly Tyer magazine and a variety of youtube channels.
Jon calls the South Platte River basin his home water because of the diversity of the fishery — from the technical tailwaters, to the smaller headwaters, to trophy stillwater. “I love to travel to new places and explore new fisheries, but I have a hard time leaving home because it’s so good!”
Jon says, “ I’m honestly humbled to be an Umpqua Signature Tyer. The whole Umpqua team is stacked with people I have looked up to my entire life. It really is a dream come true.”
