Hans was born in Kentucky, but his parents moved to Colorado when he was just 3 years old. Living in Colorado Springs for the past 33 years, he calls himself a "Non-native, native". He has been the floor manager and a professional guide at Angler's Cover for several years and loves sharing fishing stories with his regulars.
Hans was bitten by the euro nymphing bug and that's what he does most when fish are not rising or willing to chase streamers. His guilty pleasure when it comes to fly fishing is using extremely heavy streamers on a tight line system. This technique gives him the ability to fish streamers very slowly, sweeping the rod tip upstream or downstream to instantly change the direction of the streamer - An impossible task on a more traditional streamer rig. "I believe this direction change is a trigger for fish and will often convince them the offering is real."
Most of the flies he ties are heavy and purposely designed for tight line nymphing, however they also work great as an attractor fly on a traditional indicator rig often eliminating the need for split shot. Hans uses a technique he refers to as "Posting the bead" which allows him to create flies with beads located in unconventional places.
Hans has been teaching fly tying classes at Anglers Covey in Colorado Springs for several years and is a reoccurring guest tyer at multiple large fly-fishing events. If he's not on the water stalking fish or spending time with his wife and kids, you will likely find him at his tying desk experimenting with new ideas.
"The thought of having a fly pattern accepted by Umpqua has been a dream of mine for 10 years, it's hard to believe that dream has become a reality. I am truly blessed to be part of the Umpqua family of tyers."
His goal is to never stop learning and always keep growing as an angler and a guide. He hopes to be able to support his family while continuing to do what he loves for a living.
