Dennis Collier
Signature Tyer
My introduction and subsequent passion for the sport of fly fishing and fly tying, began around seventy years ago, when, as a lad of six years age, I tagged along with “dad” on his fly fishing forays to some of Colorado’s Front Range lakes and streams. Seven decades later I still have the same passion for the sport as yesteryear, but fish a little slower these days. When I turned ten, Santa left a Herter’s “Basic Fly Tying” kit under the Christmas tree and I have remained a steadfast student of the fly tier’s art ever since.
In 2005 I retired after a long career in commercial art; Lithography; medical photography, sales and sales management in the graphic arts industry. Subsequently I began seriously writing, drawing and photographing fly fishing and fly tying subject matter for publications such as Southwest, Northwest, and Eastern Fly Fishing magazines. I also had a feature article on Callibaetis mayflies published by Fly Fisherman magazine – which led to an invitation to submit several of my fly patterns for the Western Collection at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor, NY. A treasured honor!
I was likewise honored to be a contributing author and photographer in the book “Modern Terrestrials” by Jerry Hubka and Rick Takahashi. This in addition to other book inclusions, related internet web sites; published interviews, fly tying presentations at West Denver TU; AFFTA trade show; International Sportsman’s Exo, and numerous fly tying demos over the years at area fly shops. It has been a most interesting and fulfilling path as a student of many “great names” in our sport. I hope I was able to pay it forward.
In a recent issue of High Country Angler, well known former Royal Gorge Anglers fly shop owner, Bill Edrington, claimed that the Bread & Butter Bugger is his “go to” fly for streamer fishing the Arkansas River drainage. High praise indeed, and if it’s good enough for Bill, I’ll take that to the bank.
