Signature Tyer
Tying flies is a daily activity for me, and most days it’s the first thing I do in the morning and the last thing I do at night. As a guide on Utah’s majestic Green River, I tie flies to ensure my clients have a successful day on the water. As an avid fly fisherman in my down time, I tie flies as a means of creative expression. In my professional and personal life, I’m always looking for ways to refine the craft I took to at a young age.
My grandparents first introduced me to fishing on weekend trips to a local reservoir. They instilled a love for fishing and the outdoors in me, and sparked the fire which would become the focal point of my life. My interest in fishing, and fly fishing in particular, grew rapidly, and as a child I quickly read every book on the subject that my local library possessed. When I was 11 years old, I began tying flies with my best friend. I vividly remember tying my first fly, a Black Wooly Bugger. Soon after, I eagerly saved money from my job delivering newspapers to buy my first fly fishing setup.
I fished everywhere possible, from pristine mountain lakes to carp-filled ponds near city landfills. If there were fish to be caught, I was there. Of all the places I fished growing up, one in particular felt magical-the Green River. In 2006, I had the opportunity to become a guide for Trout Creek Flies. I was hired by renowned Denny Breer, and I was fortunate to be mentored by him and others such as Emmett Heath, who strongly influenced my approach to guiding and fly tying. Their patience, passion, and hard-earned knowledge and skills left a huge mark on me and how I view my profession.
In 2012, my pursuit of excellence in guiding and instructing led me to become a Fly Fishers International (FFI) Certified Casting Instructor (CCI). I deeply believe that guiding isn’t just about providing opportunities for people to hook fish; at its core, it’s about teaching and empowering people. There is nothing more rewarding than helping improve a person’s skills and watching them progress as a fly fisher.
In 2014, I met my wife Ru, who’s from Taiwan. In the off season, we travel to her home country to visit her family, and of course, do some fishing. In Taiwan, I enjoy fly fishing for Mahseer and Giant Snakehead as well as a variety of saltwater species. Ru and I share a fondness for travel. Wherever we go, from Canada to Belize, I’m sure to be found with my fly rods and tying vice, always ready for a fly fishing adventure.
