Home Waters – Laguna Madre, Texas - bonefish flats Oahu, Hawaii - Bitterroot River, Montana
Since 1995, I’ve been fly fishing and guiding all over the country and the world. From Great Lakes style Stealheading in Ohio and Pennsylvania to classic western style trouting in the northern Rockies of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. I’ve fished a dozen or more places in Baja, Mexico and guided for four seasons at Crocodile Bay Lodge, Costa Rica. I did a long tour of duty in the Florida Keys and tightened lines in New Zealand and Christmas Island in the Pacific. I spent several years exploring and developing the amazing bonefish fishery of Oahu, Hawaii. My adopted home for most of that time was the Bitterroot Valley in western Montana. Through various life events, I’ve decided re-settle in Corpus Christi, Texas where there is great fishing year-round.
After so many years dedicating myself to fly fishing, I feel that my fishing style has come full circle. These days, I’m equally at home throwing a cast net over a school of menhaden for bait as I am getting a long drift on a glassy pool for a sporadically rising Rainbow sipping trico spinners.
Favorite Fly – Too tough to truly answer. I suppose any fly that I have just created in my vise that I have yet to try. Perennial favorites would be: Montana- Hill’s Designated Hitter series for stoneflies and the Quigley Cripple style for mayflies. Hawaii- Hill’s Mai Tai Clouser, Hall’s Perfect Crab. Texas- Hill’s Corpus Creeper.
What elements make for a great fly - Durability, action and it must look like food.
Who are your mentors in the sport – For fly tying: Chuck Stranahan , Gary LaFontaine and John Foust
Philosophy on fly fishing – I try not to measure success on the numbers or the size of fish but on the fish well caught.
