Lake Lanier in Atlanta area, Georgia
Any canal or lake in Miami-Dade County or Broward County, Florida
Flat in Biscayne Bay and Florida Bay
About – I grew up in Miami and moved to the Atlanta area about 13 years ago. I feel comfortable throwing flies at trout in small creeks, tarpon on the flats and just about any other species of fish in all kinds of water. I wrote a book called “South Florida’s Peacock Bass” in 1996. I have also written for several magazines. My original fly patterns have appeared in several books as well. The Electric Bunny is my first pattern that Umpqua ties.
I am a father (two daughters,) an artist (painting and photography,) adjunct college professor (Georgia State University, art) and I work for an environmental consulting company (because I like to eat and not live under a bridge.)
Favorite Fly – Depends, what fish am I trying to catch?
What elements make for a great fly – If it is castable, looks good (to fish and angler) and catches fish, it’s a great fly.
Who are your mentors in the sport – I learned how to fly cast by watching Lefty Kreh on television shows. I have tried to learn something from anyone I have ever fished with and every fishing-related thing I’ve ever read, watched, etc.
Philosophy on fly fishing – Fly fishing snob. I’d rather NOT catch anything on fly than catch something by other methods. I feel that fly fishing connects the angler to the rhythms of the fish, the water and the universe in a way that no other method can.
