Growing up in north Texas, John Wood became fascinated with fishing at a very young age chasing largemouth, bluegills and crappie with conventional tackle. An unintentional introduction to fly fishing by an uncle, at age 9, would eventually change the course of John’s angling life. His intense craving to catch fish on personally hand crafted lures was a perfect foundation for the transition to fly tying and fly design.
His love of all things fly fishing led John to travel, live and fly fish across the country pursuing fish species in warm and cold water, fresh and salt. Now a freelance writer/photographer, fly tyer and fly designer, John has published dozens of articles covering fly fishing destinations, conservation, tyer profiles and fly tying in national publications including American Fly Fishing, Fly Tyer and Tail magazines.
John’s fly fishing pursuits are varied. Whether he’s targeting Trico sipping trout, largemouth bass in heavy cover, redfish in skinny water or farm pond sunfish, he feels each experience has been enlightening in its own way. Those diverse experiences have inspired fly designs for catching everything from bluegill to tarpon. When asked what’s his favorite fish species, John will gladly tell you “the last one I caught.”
