"I used to take a lot of throat samples from fish and I would notice that probably 80% of the bugs pumped out had a reddish head to them.
When talking to some biologists about it they informed me that those were actually the male baetis nymphs I was seeing.
I though there must've been a reason why fish were keying in on so many of these rust-colored eyes or heads. So I developed the pattern initially with a red color to them. I probably worked on this fly for five years, fishing it and giving it to buddies."
